Back in motion

Hmmm... We've got some catching up to do here. After our eventful trip to Maui, we settled back down in GA with my (Shannon's) family for a beautiful early Christmas celebration. A couple days before Christmas, we headed back up to Emporia to spend the holiday with Sean's family.

We just found out a couple days ago that we will be heading back up north to Pennsylvania for another 5 months. This time, we're settling down in York, only about 30 minutes from where we were before. Sean and I headed up there yesterday in order to secure housing, and we were fortunate to find a great place with one more unit available as quickly as we needed it. We'll have a garage and gas fireplace for this cooold Pennsylvania winter we'll be experiencing.

Sean is presently in Denver, CO, for a couple presentations he's delivering there, so we may end up farther west come summer... We'll see!

Road to Hana and then Home Sweet Home

Now that we have somewhat recovered from our red-eye back to the mainland, we can fill you in on our last day in Maui. We awoke Sunday morning and took our time packing up in order to check out of our villa by 11am. Once we said our farewells to Kapalua, we headed to Kaanapoli to get brunch at a place we like called CJ's Cafe. There we mapped out our day. Our flight was taking off from the Kahului airport at 10:10pm, so we had all day to work with. We had decided we wanted to fit in the one activity that we hadn't had time for all week - driving the infamous Road to Hana. We started out a little later than most, but we still got to see all of the glorious sights up on the northern shores of Maui, riding along through hairpin turns and switchbacks galore. Oh how fun!
We made it back to Kahului around 8pm, just in time to grab some dinner, change clothes (in the bathroom at Starbucks), and turn in our rental car. We were on the plane on time, and all went well back to Atlanta. Our good friend Stephen (both from my college days at Toccoa and grad school days at Regent) picked us up and took us back to their home, where we had left our car parked all week. Sean played with their kiddos for a bit while I caught up with Kim, and then we headed back home.
We've got to say, Maui was incredible for a vacation, but there's no place like home for the holidays. I think this old carol sums up our year well:
...Now in Pennsylvania folks are traveling down to Dixie's sunny shore
From the Atlantic to Pacific - Oh, the season is terrific
Oh, there's no place like home for the holidays
For the holidays you can't beat home sweet home.

Maui: A Day 6 Remebrance and Day 7 Prequel

On our sixth day, we did yet more shopping. (We are definitely doing our part in keeping the surf companies in business around here.) One of our favorite purchases was a Christmas tree ornament that displays a photo of Hawaiian Santa Claus and his sleigh being pulled by flying dolphins. In between stores, we took time to stop at a local cafe for lunch. It was so delicious we are going back there again for a late breakfast.

We got back from our day out just in time to see the sun set and yet another rainbow, an activity we will miss. We took lots of photos of this one, photos capturing a picturesque array of colors. These photos and others could easily be translated into postcards, as we are sure others who have come here and taken photos could say the same thing about their captured imagery.

Dinner was had at the Plantation House, a restaurant that overlooks the golf course where the Pros will compete in a few weeks. Does this sound like a skipping record?, "the food was great!"

And we have just awakened to our final day in Maui. The plan for today is to take the famous road to Hana, a road trip around the coast of Maui that promises more good imagery. Of course, as Captain Jeff on the sailboat the other day taught us, we need to be ware of making plans. As he put it so well: "We live on a small island. The best way to ruin a good plan is to have one!" This quote will be written on our hearts forever, and Maui, as beautiful as it is, pales in comparison to the home of God's beloved. Mahalo, Maui.

Maui Day 5

Yesterday we began feeling the end drawing nigh. Maui is going to be a hard place to leave. Yet we realize that a locale such as this seems ideal in so many ways, but at the same time, we could never live here. Vacationing somewhere and living somewhere are 2 totally different experiences. Whenever a local asks us where we're from (which is actually quite a difficult question for us) and we answer Virginia, Georgia, Pennsylvania, etc., they usually react like, "Wow. That's cool! You really have winters there, huh?" Now, while I'm not looking forward just yet to a cold winter on the mainland, I can see how any type of lifestyle might get old after a while. Like when we lived in Virginia Beach and got tired of going to the beach there. When things are just around the corner, you tend to take them for granted. So the lesson for the day is, everywhere you are is someone's ideal vacation. Enjoy what's around you. We've been able to take that to heart living places only 3 or 4 months, and have gotten to see a lot of fantastic stuff. We don't have a home, but for those experiences, we're thankful. :)

But how I digress! Yesterday was spent back at our favorite beach here, Kapalua. We snorkeled there for a little while, and then headed back to Maui Tacos for a good lunch. Then we returned back to our condo to shower and dress for a night out. We went to Kaanapali to check out Whaler's Village and then on to Lahaina for some eating, shopping, and browsing, as every Friday night the art galleries and shops open their doors for some sidewalk festivities. Lahaina Front Street is also the site of the huge Banyan Tree, which is lit up for Christmas. It was another great day in Maui.

Day 4 Addendum

We forgot to note that on our sailing trip out to Molokini yesterday, we saw 2 whales. Whaling season just started here this month. They come down from the waters of Alaska to warm up for the winter in the Hawaii. Pretty smart, eh? Amazing sight.

Day 4: Maui

We woke up this morning to the sound of rain. Not a good sign considering we had a sailing and snorkeling trip planned for later that morning. Thankfully, the rain was gone after about 45 minutes, just in time for us to get in the car and drive to the harbor. We arrived at the harbor at 8am and was greeted by the sailboat captain. After we entered the sailboat, we were given hot cinnamon rolls, coffee/tea, and a lovely view. We sailed about an hour to Molokini where we swam in very wavy waters off the coast of this gorgeous setting. We brought along disposable waterproof cameras, so those pics should be developed soon. Until then, here's a look at me at the wheel (scary!) and then snapped just after we were done snorkeling. Gorgeous, isn't it?

They then served us a YUMMMMY lunch of Hawaiian style BBQ chicken, rice, salad, followed by the famous Roselani's ice cream. We went speed sailing back to Maui in some fierce wind, which topped off the day to one of the most exhilarating we've had. At promptly 2pm, our trip was done, so Sean and I went to the Lahaina Mall, where we shopped the local surf and Maui shops. We crashed when we got home after such a long day, so we're headed for a hard night's sleep soon. It's only a little after 9pm here, but after 2am in our bodies, so it's no wonder we're zonked. Tomorrow is a tentative beach day. We'll see what happens...

Maui #3

Today was so fun. Between flying through a Mauian national forest and seeing at least 10 rainbows, this was a day for the books. We got up this morning and headed over to Haleakala National Park where Skyline Eco Adventures offers ziplining tours. We did five different ziplines which ranged from easiest to most intense, and they were all such a blast. (Watch our videos below!) We highly recommend the experience if you ever get the opportunity! Got the t-shirt to boot. We went to Kula Lodge and Restaurant for lunch, which is famous on Maui for their amazing views of the valley below. Right now, we're just hanging out in our condo, waiting to watch the sun to set in about 20 minutes or so. Tonight is one of our "unplanned" evenings, and being the home-bodies that we are, we're really looking forward to it.

Maui, day two

This morning we arose around 7am, after which we went out and had breakfast on the lanai. Somewhere in between finishing breakfast and heading out to the convenience store down the road, we looked out and saw the rainbow of rainbows. Staring into this breathtaking wonder, and taking turns playing the role of professional photographer so as not to miss out on any angle, we both agreed we may never see another rainbow like this for the rest of our lives.

We had not been back in our Villa more than 10 minutes since beholding the multi-colored wonder, when we looked back out and saw its sibling appear. Only slightly shorter and a bit chunkier, it was equally able to make everything stand still, except our photography obsession. Maybe we will never see another rainbow like the siblings for the rest of our lives?

Today's beach time was shared between the famous Kapalua Bay beach and DT Fleming beach, both of which have won best beaches of the year in recent years. We were able to enjoy yet another clear day with only a few clouds to speak of, gracefully topped off by our second sunset observance from the West Maui shoreline.

Finally, we just walked in from a late dinner at the Pineapple Grill. It wins many of the awards on the island, and we are ready to give it one ourselves--one that would capture its appetizing flavor and rewarding experience. (And for you college basketball fans, I thought I would tell you that I stood side by side with Arizona Coach Lute Olson who dined there tonight as well.)

Aloha!

First day in Maui

Today was a day for some serious R&R. A 5 hour time difference and a 22 hour day yesterday notwithstanding, we had a great first day of sleeping, eating, lying on the beach watching surfers, and now getting ready to go get some dinner. We also made it to the concierge who helped us make plans for later in the week. We'll be sailing to Molokini to do some snorkeling and embarking on our first zipline adventure in Haleakala. We also plan to take the advice of many and drive the "road to Hana" which is much like living the Christian life - more about the journey than the destination. Neither of us want to plan out our days to the minute, so we're, in a sense, planning to remain somewhat unplanned to allow for the "feel" of the day to guide us. We were able to walk out on our lanai this evening and see the sun creeping into Molokai, the island across the way from us. Beautiful.

already there

We are only three days away from a return trip to Hawaii. Two years ago we went to to the island of Oahu (Honolulu), whereas this go around we will land on the island of Maui. Yesterday, we spent several hours going through a book that gives pointers on things to do. So far we have decided on a few things, but will probably wait to top off the itinerary until we get there and hear recommendations from the locals.

We must say, after going through that book, and seeing pictures online, we feel as if we are already there!

Basketball season

We went to a game last night played by my alma mater - Toccoa Falls College. My brother-in-law, Brian, in the assistant coach for the guy's team, so we went to give him a bit of support and to cheer on TFC. They ended up losing, but only by 8, in a game whose lead changed many times and which they were expected to lose by much more, so it ended up being a very exciting game to watch. I saw my old college basketball coach too - Coach Shiffer - and introduced him to Sean. We went with Christine and the kids, and they loved it, so it was a great evening had by all.

Happy Belated Thanksgiving

It's been a busy week. We spent a week and a half with Sean's parents in Emporia and were able to celebrate with them their 40th anniversary. We had a fun day of going out to eat at one of their favorite restaurants and doing a bit of shopping. We headed down here to GA on Wednesday and fought through one of the busiest traveling days of the year. We got caught up in some serious traffic, but finally found our way back south. Thanksgiving was a day of eating and eating some more, as it is for most of us, and the days since have been trying to finish up all those yummy leftovers. As the Howards are known for, we found our way to some shopping on Black Friday, but didn't do too much damage. It wasn't a year for the 5am rush, but next year, watch out...

And tonight was a bittersweet tradition. My beloved Tide failed again at materializing a win against the Auburn Tigers, making that a 6 game losing streak. (I have now even converted my GA niece into becoming loyal to AL. She wants a crimson jersey for Christmas. :) )But, as I watch the game with my Daddy, an avid Auburn fan, I can squeak out a good feeling or two at having at least one win in the family. But next year, watch out...

Our holiday in full color

We've been in Emporia since Sunday doing some serious R&R. We were able to see the full spectrum of fall colors in Harrisburg, and by the time we left, the leaves were all but on the ground. Now as we've moved slightly more south, we have come at what must be peak season here, as the colors are glorious all around the house. Sean and I took some pictures yesterday that we'll upload soon, I'm sure. And we're heading to Georgia later this week and will be there for the better part of a month, so we'll get to see those colors changing at their prime as well. I hope I don't seem too obsessed with the fall colors this year, but I absolutely love them. I guess its easy to get obsessed about those things you love. I make no apologies for it. :)

Packing up

I can't believe we're on our way out of PA. We plan to leave Sunday after the morning services, so we will be busy packing up this weekend. I've made the calls to the electric, gas, and cable/internet people to have it cut off, I've posted the very few things we bought while here onto Craig's List, and we've already begun saying our goodbyes to the people we have gotten to know here. We have fit several weeks of sightseeing into several days, we've visited most of the establishments that have become "favorite places" these last 3 months, and we have begun making "piles" of stuff that will go into our all-too familiar boxes.

And it seems like we've just done this. I guess we really have; 3 months is not a very long time. This is our life. And we wouldn't have it any other way.

Tourism and friends

Friday and Saturday were spent touring nearby nationally renowned attractions. On Friday, we went back to Hershey, only this time to take in a bit of the town. We started out the day with a tour of Chocolate World, where we watched a 3-D presentation about Hershey's, attended a chocolate tasting event, and took a tour that took us through the Chocolate Factory and presented a step by step orientation of how the various chocolates are made.

We then went over to the Hershey Museum and learned a great deal of Milton Hershey's (the founder of Hershey's) life, as well as the development of the chocolate world and the unique town of Hershey. We also saw an Apostolic Clock in the museum, of which there are only four in existence today. At a quarter of an hour, it has a religious-themed procession with Jesus and his 12 disciples, and even the devil, coming out of the clock and performing a ceremony based on the last days of Christ. And before leaving for the day, we found that the legend is true: You can smell chocolate in Hershey.

On Saturday we went to Gettysburg to meet up with a college friend of Shannon's, Tiffani, and her husband, Lee. We enjoyed so much our time with them, and I know Shannon loved being able to take a walk back in time and visit with a good friend. We saw, among other things, the Gettysburg National Cemetery where the location of Lincoln's famed Gettysburg address occurred. We ended the night taking a tour that told tales of the local folklore throughout Gettysburg. We're glad that we're finally checking some things off our our "To Do in PA". Here are the pics of Hershey and Gettysburg!

Broadway in Hershey

We went to see the musical The Producers last evening at Hershey Theatre. Yes, Hershey is where Hershey chocolates originated and continues to thrive. Hershey Theatre is actually right off of Cocoa Avenue. (And Cocoa Avenue intersects with Chocolate Avenue.) It was a great show--lots of laughs, wit, and fun. If you ever get a chance to see it, we give it a good recommendation.

Before we leave, we plan to make our way back to Hershey (it is only 15 minutes from where we live) to tour the Chocolate Factory and for other fun and tasty treats!

Georgia

I've been in GA this week visiting family, which has been very nice. It has not only been a welcome respite from the brrrr-cold of PA, but its been refreshing to fall into the familiar routine of family and home. It's a short trip, but worth it. Sean and I will be back down here again soon for Thanksgiving for a more extended visit, which will give us a broader calendar to see all of our dear friends in the area (for those that check the blog, write us into your calendars!) :)

as we see it

Here is a view of the trail we exercise on every day. This trail is only a few yards from our front door, and is the epitomy of a nature trail. Just this morning we saw squirrels, birds, and a groundhog in the margins of a few of our steps.

Back home

We arrived back in PA on Saturday evening, after a very long, hard week. Sean is doing pretty well, though the effect of losing such a young aunt has taken its toll on his heart and soul. We didn't even realize today was Columbus Day until mid-morning, when Sean realized he didn't need to go into the office, because they were closed today too. We are slowly but surely getting back into the swing of things here. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this time for Sean and his family. I know it is appreciated.

Family time

I'm sorry to say that although we are surrounded by Sean's family right now in North Carolina, it is because his aunt passed away on Tuesday. She will be greatly missed here. Our only consolation is her faith in our loving and beautiful God who is now celebrating her new body and life with her.

We went to the visitation yesterday, and it was attended by an overwhelming crowd of people who have loved her and her children immensely. Today is the funeral, so please keep Sean and his family in your prayers when you think about them.

Walking

We've spent these beautiful autumn mornings walking the nature trail that connects our apartments with their sister condos down the road. We've enjoyed it so much. It's been a great time of talking, sharing, and working up a sweat as we watch the leaves change before our eyes. It's just been in the past 3 or 4 mornings that we see considerable differences in colors from one morning to the next. The leaves should be peaking very soon, so I'm sure we'll have our trusty camera out to capture this, one of our favorite things.

Tropical Smoothie Redeemed

Remember this? Well, when we saw that Harrisburg was opening their own Tropical Smoothie, we knew we had to give it another chance. When we found out the grand opening was today, we thought that we may wait a week or 2 for them to work out the kinks, but then our craving took over and we found ourselves making our way there for lunch. We were not disappointed! THey did an excellent job. It took us back to another place and time eating the wraps and drinking the smoothies - Sean pictured himself getting ready for a training session with the YMCA of Hampton Roads, and I found myself thinking about heading back to the law library for an afternoon with law students. It's nice to have pieces of the familiar in a foreign land!

Basketball

We've been enjoying the gym and walking trails that this apartment complex provides. We try to get out to one of them once a day to get some exercise, and on most of those mornings, Sean leaves a little early so that he can take advantage of one of the birthday presents I got him - the basketball. Our complex also has a court, so he goes out and shoots some hoops. We'll miss all this beautiful weather!

Let the Celebration Begin!

This past weekend my brother proposed to his girlfriend; she said yes, and the entire family is now celebrating. Shannon and I flew out to Texas this past summer to get to know them as a couple. It was a good time had by all.
There is nothing like an emerging love, a wedding to celebrate that love--a man afforded the chance to celebrate all this as it happens to his brother. Congrats brother, and to your bride to be. For what it's worth, the travelers are thinking of you.

Because of my birthday...

Because of my birthday, I am on the basketball court again. Shannon gave me a variety of presents for my birthday last week--among those being something I kept wanting to get but never got around to: a basketball. The last few days I have been on the basketball court, working the rust off of my jump shot. I have really enjoyed it and next week hope to get Shannon out there with me.

Happy Birthday cont...

Happy birthday...

to my fellow traveler, my best friend, my beautiful husband. We're having a celebration day just like we like it - low key and together. I'm going to make steaks and a birthday cake for tonight, so maybe I'll have pictures to post later...

Continuing across the hills...

Today we celebrated 3 years of marriage. The time has gone by so fast, as it only seems like yesterday we were in Georgia saying I do. We had a great day - we went to my favorite spot for lunch and then went exploring more around the city (aka: new shopping mall). For dinner, I decided to surprise Sean with a dinner of Mongolian Beef - recipe via the internet promising that it was PF Changs' own recipe. It was probably the most complicated meal I've ever made (which might speak to my cooking endeavors), but it turned out really good, if I do say so myself. We topped it off with Sean's favorite dessert - apple crumb pie, which is made by Mrs. Smith herself. I couldn't do any better, so why try?

I love being married to this man, and I'm looking forward to the life we'll lead together.

Summer concert in a vineyard

We had a lovely evening tonight sitting out on a lawn, listening to jazz and blues, eating crab dip and peach cobbler, and watching about 500 people enjoy the night under the stars. We spent the evening at Nissley Vineyards in Bainbridge, PA, where they hold a summer concert series. Tonight was the last night, and we're so glad we made it. It was so nice sitting under what started as a blue sky, ending in a clear starry night. The locals knew how to do it up, as most of them arrived with chairs, tables, candles (a few candelabras too), food galore, and usually a vase of flowers. We were amazed! That kind of music begs you to dance, and many people did, which brought back many wonderful memories of dancing to our favorite swing music in Virginia. For more of our pics, go here.

Carrying on

I just noticed I haven't written for a week. We haven't done anything extraordinarily interesting to write about, but we're enjoying this time nonetheless. Sean is wrapping up the first phase of the project this week, so that is a huge relief for him. I've been enjoying being "settled in" for the brief time that it will last. I've done some of my ebay selling and have a roomful of stuff left to sell in the next 2 months...

Right now I'm watching the old movie, Rebecca, based on the book by Daphne Du Maurier. The book and movie are very good, in case you are in the mood for a good classic.

Mt. Gretna and PA cold

We had a good day yesterday as we made our way to a popular art festival in central PA called the Mt. Gretna Outdoor Art Show. We went with a couple from the church who attend every year. We drove about 20 minutes outside of Harrisburg, and then we all loaded ourselves onto a school bus that brought back memories for many of us of riding a bus just like that for various school activities. The bus dropped us off in the middle of nowhere, far enough away to have safely brought our cell phone bars down to nothing. The setting was gorgeous with massive trees surrounding us and little gingerbread houses dotting the landscape. The art itself was nice, but our favorite part was by far the scenery. And the weather was perfect - a balmy 75 - 80 degrees, but extremely pleasant in the shade of the trees.

...which is more than I can say for today. A drizzling rain plummeted the temperature down to long sleeve shirts and pants weather. I felt like I was on another continent. I kept thinking - August 19 and in the 60's????? Strange, this foreign land of Pennsylvania. But we're enjoying this life still, and are looking forward to making more memories in the weeks ahead.

Connected again

We finally got our internet and cable service hooked up today. We have been spending our evenings prior to tonight doing the whole "unplugged" thing, so we're relishing the flicker of a couple of different screens flashing in our living room tonight. I'll have to take pictures of our humble abode soon and post them up. Until then, this is a picture of the beautiful church with which Sean is working. The state capital is directly across the street, actually right where I am standing to take the picture.

Northern VA

Sean and I drove down to McLean, VA, yesterday so that he could attend his work staff conference. I tagged along and got to visit with my friend Jessel and her family last night. Today, Sean has been in meetings all day, so I have taken my time strolling around an outlet mall, and now I'm sitting in a Panera checking email and killing a little time until I go to pick Sean up at about 5:30pm. I think I may go hit one more mall (this one in the air-conditioning, thank goodness) until that time comes. It's been good to be in Virginia again, even for a day, but we are actually looking forward to making our way back up to our temporary home in Harrisburg tonight. I've spent a few days now putting some minimal furniture together and stocking up on essentials at Target and Ikea, so it's feeling more like home. Home is where the heart is, as they say.

Aliens of the Deep 3D

We saw a really cool IMAX documentary this afternoon at the Harrisburg Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts. Take a peek here for info on it and to watch the trailer. Fascinating. Made us want to be marine biologists. And the 3D glasses are always cool.

in Harrisburg

We got in last night around 9pm and have settled into our hotel, where we will be staying until our apartment is ready on the 8th. Barring some rather lively conversation in the room next to us at around 3am, we had a good night's sleep (Sean has already gotten us some $$ from the front desk for the inconvenience). Sean's first day on the job went well this morning, for which we are very thankful. We plan to go grab some lunch somewhere around downtown - we noticed quite a few promising restaurants as we walked around last night.

En route

Sean and I successfully packed up hearth and home in Birmingham, and then my brother-in-law, Brian, came down to help us pack it all in a truck. Then we drove to GA caravan style with 4 vehicles in a row, Brian driving the monster truck of them all. Thankfully, everyone arrived alive and well, if not a mite tired. The next day, we got the truck unpacked ("we" meaning mostly Sean and Brian), and enjoyed the fruits of our labor.

It was nice to be back with all the family yesterday for my 33rd year of existence. The older I get, the more I realize how unimportant "things" are, and how precious family is. Sean and I left GA late last night and drove into the wee hours of the morning to arrive in Emporia, where we've been busy today unpacking, organizing, and packing once again for our departure tomorrow for Harrisburg, PA. One more move, at least until November...

Spontaneity

At around 10:30 last evening, Shannon and I spontaneously decided to take a trip to Birmingham. We arrived around 1:30 am central time. We're helping to pack up Shannon's parents house, as her Dad just took a job in Georgia. Birmingham is where Shannon grew up, and we have spent a majority of our first day here driving by the schools, churches, and houses she spent so much time in during her early years.

We'll head back to Georgia sometime next week and then make our way up to Harrisburg, PA, for my next project. We have begun planning some of our Pennsylvania itinerary, including a trip to the Little League World Series to meet up with Shannon's bro-in-law, Brian.

But before then, it's back to Birmingham!

Fun day

I'm sitting at my sister Christine's house with Sean, Ethan, and Allie. Christine and Brian are out on a date, so we volunteered to spend some quality time with our nephew and niece. We've had a blast today hiking up to Little Falls and splashing around in the water at the base of the falls for a while. We capped off the evening with their first taste of chinese food - which they fortunately liked. Allie was fondest of the egg drop soup and chicken lo mein, while Ethan liked the fortune cookies the best (although he also enjoyed the sweet and sour chicken which he affectionately dubbed "chicken puffs"). They both loved the chop sticks too! Sean and Allie are currently waiting for me to start a game of monopoly, so I'd better sign off. I'll leave you with Ethan's fortune from his cookie, "Visit a park. Enjoy what nature has to offer." Perfect for the day...

Weekend in Charlotte

We headed over to Charlotte this past weekend for one last hurrah. Yesterday's church service was our last there. They asked Sean to do the sermon, and, I have to say, he worked that pulpit over. Of those who shook Sean's hand afterwards, my favorite was a little 8 year old boy. He shook Sean's hand and said, "I wanted to tell you that I enjoyed the sermon." To which Sean responded, "Great! What was your favorite part?" This cute little guy said, "I liked the whole thing. This Sunday I actually listened." I told Sean that would be the best compliment he could get.

They also presented Sean with 2 photos of the church framed. We are sad to be leaving Charlotte, but are grateful for the experience we had there. Several families have already told us we could come and stay with them anytime we are in the area, and we just might take them up on their offers one of these days.

Today, we are at Sean's parents' house. We will be here through the week and then head down to Georgia to spend time with my family. I'll get to spend another birthday with them before we head up to PA in early August.

Texas

Sean and I arrived in Texas on Thursday night. Lance and his girlfriend, Cheryl, met us at the airport and we spent the evening catching up. Saturday morning we left for Austin for a weekend where we went to a jazz cafe, a sculpture museum, walked along the shops of Columbus Ave, and ate a LOT of good food! Sean and I cashed in some Hilton points left over from Hawaii and stayed in style for free (which you know I love.)

We came back to Houston last night, and Sean and I have just been chilling out today at Lance's apartment while he and Cheryl are both at work. We plan to see them tonight, go get more good food, and enjoy our last night together. We head to the airport early in the morning, and will hopefully be back in Virginia by lunchtime. It's been a really good weekend - we look forward to seeing them both again soon!

In limbo

Well, it's been a whirlwind week. We moved out on Friday and headed up here to Virginia to stay with Sean's parents for a few days. Yesterday, Sean and I were to go up to Harrisburg for the day to look at some apartments, but I got some weird stomach bug and had to stay home. Sean went up by himself and found a place for us to live this fall, so that's great news! He also got to meet with the church committee, which he really enjoyed. He'll be headed back home this afternoon, and then we'll get ready to leave for Texas on Thursday of this week to visit Sean's brother Lance.

Top Five Countdown

We've officially begun the countdown of "lasts" in Charlotte. We just spent our last weekend, attended our last church service, and I made my last trip to see my family in South Carolina. The list continues by the hour. Sean and I were talking yesterday about some of the favorite things we've done, or the places that have become our favorite since arriving, so I thought I'd compile a list of my Top Five.

1. The US Whitewater Center. We've been countless time since discovering it, and we love not only the rigorous hikes through the woods and streams, but also the great restaurant on site.

2. Bobcats Arena. That game was too cool.

3. Lake Wylie. Friends from the church took us out on their lake house for the day, and the view was amazing.

4. The Botanical Gardens. We took another trip out there a few days ago, and it is really beautiful. That's where the pictures here are from.

5. Super Target. I know, but I found myself there every week. It's gotta have a place in the top 5. (I doubt it'd make Sean's Top 5...) ;)

New project

Well, the jury is in. We are going to Harrisburg, PA for our next project. A beautiful downtown church near the capital building. It will be different for this southern girl to go due north, but how bad can a city be located that close to Hershey Chocolate World? ;)

Can you believe our last day here is less than 2 weeks away? Time has flown, once again. Sean and I were discussing how this life is conducive for a fast life. You move in, get organized, get familiar, and move out. But it's good. We love it. More info as it comes...

Time goes by

The past couple of weeks were a lot of fun - I got to spend a lot of time with my family and some friends in Georgia (missed you RA), and then with my sister, Christine, and her clan up here in Charlotte. We had a grand time of shopping (no surprise there), miniature golf (with my "unathletic" sister leading the way with -count 'em- 2 holes-in-one!), and just hanging out. Christine, Allie, Ethan, and I were also able to go drive around to our old houses, church, and Christine's first-grade school. I don't remember them except in stories I've heard, but Christine remembered it all vividly, so it was nice getting her take on the memories while we were there. It was so nice to have them all here, and they're already missed.

We can't believe how swiftly time if flying by. We've only got less than 3 weeks left here, and then our traveling begins. We plan to make stops in Texas, Virginia, and Georgia, ending up at our next project in... TBA!

Back Together

Shannon had a great time in Georgia last week, and I got as much out of the bachelor lifestyle as I could. I did hit my writing deadline, finished the two books, viewed tons of poker shows, but rented no movies.

Shannon arrived back in town last night, and arriving with her were my sister-in-law, niece and nephew. My brother-in-law pulled in town a few hours ago, and I am greatly enjoying having Shannon back and spending time with my extended family. With only three weeks to go in Charlotte, we are preparing for the inevitable exit and anticipating the next project. More to come on that project.

Beginning Tomorrow...

We went back out to the U.S. National Whitewater Park today and hiked the main trail. We cleared the trail just in time for a bike race to begin and then had dinner at the restaurant on site--eating out on the terrace to the views of a setting sun and whitewater rafting.

On a different note, beginning tomorrow, Shannon and I part ways for a week. She is going to Georgia to spend time with her family. Left behind, I will remain the faithful consultant, and in my free time will try to finish reading two books, work on a marketing project, watch a horror movie or two, and reach a writing deadline.

We've spent some time this past week planning out our summer travels. My project here ends in late June, after which we are going to devote a good month or so to vacation in several states. From a small coastal village in North Carolina to the music capital of Austin, Texas, we look forward to seeing more of America the beautiful!

Eventful week

It's been a crazy week. After our foray into our whitewater mecca, we went back the very next day to do some trail running. Great idea, and it was fun while it lasted, until I turned my ankle on a root on the trail. Sean was my hero again, being ever the supportive husband and friend, and I made it out fine. We even stayed a little later at the center by having dinner at the restaurant on site. Very good, but my ankle was definitely stiff by the time we left. The next morning I woke up with it swollen and very weak, so I hobbled around with an ankle brace for the next several days.

On Thursday, North Carolina and Italy met. My friend, Jill, is back in the states for a couple of weeks to see family before her big event. She was in Greensboro with her Mom, so I drove up to see her for the day. We had such a great time - we shopped for baby stuff for her bambino and new trail runners for me. Both successful ventures!

That brings us to yesterday - I was sitting just as I am now at my laptop and all of a sudden, I get this excruciating pain in my upper back, near my shoulder blade. It was debilitating pain, so much so that I had to get my ever faithful hero to help me to our bedroom to lie down (lay down?, no I think it's lie) for a while until the pain finally started to dull to an achey soreness a few hours later. Today, the soreness is akin to having had my back run a marathon yesterday. I have no idea what that was (maybe one of you do), but I never want to feel that again. I'd rather sprain an ankle any day of the week.

So, that's been my week. Eventful to be sure.

A new favorite thing....

We were so excited to discover a new place today only 6 miles from our home. We went to the US National Whitewater Center in Charlotte - the only one in the entire country. There you can find the largest man-made whitewater river for rafting and kayaking, as well as mountain biking & hiking trails (which we explored today), a challenge course, climbing walls, and a restaurant. Very cool place. Sean & I were able to take a pretty rigorous 3 mile hike along a river, beside tons of honeysuckle, and up and down a hilly terrain, so we found our new favorite place to be in Charlotte. We plan to go as much as possible while we're here! More pics here.

Wednesday night blues

We went to church on Wednesday night for a fellowship dinner and a promise of it being "Blue Night." No offense to churches everywhere, but I wasn't expecting much. After a picnic-style supper of hamburgers, hot-dogs, baked beans, and watermelon, we relaxed in our hard plastic lunchroom-style chairs for an evening of surprisingly good jazz and blues. The music was performed by one of the better known bands in Charlotte called Robin Rogers and her Hot Band (no points for originality). Robin has a very mellow, smooth, and kinda raspy voice that made me wish that the concert had been held outside on the grass, not in the fellowship hall. It would've made for a great summer concert. Her band was really good too; one guy sounded a whole lot like Louis Armstrong. And when they started singing "At Last", we couldn't help but like them.

So, if you're ever in Charlotte on a Tuesday night, you can go here and listen to some good blues.

Springy

It was a welcome relief to have a beautiful day shine down on us for Mother's Day today. We got to spend it by going to church with Sean's parents and brother, relaxing in the backyard this afternoon (while avoiding the Mother's Day crowds at the local eateries), throwing the baseball around while Caleb (the parents' faithful golden retriever) tried to intercept, and entering the madhouse that is called Cracker Barrel for dinner. We just relaxed and watched some HGTV this evening, and now we are all retiring one by one as we anticipate another day together tomorrow. I've missed spending the holiday with my beautiful Mother and family, but I am thankful for such wonderful in-laws.

More Visitors

Yesterday my parents came down from Virginia with their golden retriever, Caleb, and my brother flew over from Houston. With it being Mother's Day weekend, and the month my brother and father celebrate their birthdays, we thought this weekend was an appropriate opportunity for a rendezvous.

The weather was beautiful today and we just finished grilling out. We may take my Mom to the Botanical Gardens tomorrow as part of her Mother's Day Gift.

Happy Mother's day to all the Mothers!

Nice visit; New wheels

Blake & Laura came with their little Samuel for a visit this weekend. We enjoyed their company, but we were irritated that it rained all weekend. They didn't get to see the beautiful Charlotte days, but I think they enjoyed themselves anyway.

We have just gotten our latest donation from a couple in the church - we've been loaned two nice bikes to use for our time here. I can't wait to get those on a trail! And a promise to those worried - there are no toe guards to be found!

Visitors In Route

Friends from Virginia are coming for a visit this weekend. They should be here any minute . The weather forecast tells of constant rain until Sunday--meaning a great deal of indoor conversing is on the agenda.

Gardens

Late yesterday afternoon Shannon and I went to the local Botanical Gardens. The group I am consulting had a project event there, and so Shannon and I were privileged to spend the evening with them on the beautiful grounds. We could not have asked for a better day for the event.

We have had several people to give us tickets so we plan to go back in the near future and take more photos and witness more of the seasonal blossoms.

Night Life and Light

After a meeting earlier this evening, I came home and
Shannon and I began a wonderful evening together. We grilled steaks, and after dinner both of us agreed that those were among the best we have ever eaten. (We bought them at a Super Target in South Carolina.)

Next, we lit a candle in the new vase Shannon purchased yesterday and viewed the movie, Children of Men. It was an interesting movie, a futuristic film set in the year 2027. In addition, we also read from our chosen books and are now winding down--preparing to view a sitcom before crashing. Good night and good luck.

The Great Deflation

So, we were sitting in bed last night chatting before we turned off the lights, and Sean gets up to go get something to drink, and BOOM, I hit bottom. As most of you know, it is most convenient for us in our traveling to bring with us our formerly faithful air mattress on which to sleep. It has held up well these last 9 months. With a feather topper on it, it even feels like a real mattress - a bit more like Japanese sleeping with it being so low to the ground, but a great bed nonetheless.

Last night, however, we sprung a leak: A very annoying, slow, impossible-to-find leak. Upon my first bottoming-out, I re-juiced it, as you have to do every few weeks to maintain firmness, and we fell asleep, albeit fitfully, only slightly concerned about its ability. At 3am, we both awoke with our shoulders grazing the floor once again. So, sleepy and annoyed, I re-juiced it again. At 6am, BOOM, same thing. Sean just stayed awake, while I rejuiced it one more time, figuring I could do with another 3 hours of sleep before I hit the ground again. And just like clockwork, 9am, BOOM. I stayed there out of sheer indignation, refusing to allow a mattress to get the better of me, but by 9:30am, with my shoulder, side and hip all feeling as if we were out camping, I got up too.

I went to Target and bought a new one. $22 with a guarantee of no leaks for 1 year. And I have to acknowledge that 9 straight months of use is probably pretty good for an air mattress that would normally get used only occasionally under normal circumstances. Here's hoping for 12 months!

Spring has sprung...finally

Spring is finally starting to reappear around Charlotte. It is supposed to be sunny for at least the next several days, and actually above 70 degrees, which is fabulous. I'm still fighting off the remainder of my cold, holding on to a cough and using up record amounts of tissues. Hopefully, this is on its way out, and Sean and I will be able to enjoy this weather very soon!

Virginia Tech

Like the rest of the country, Shannon and I are in mourning over the tragic and horrific events that befell the Virginia Tech Campus yesterday. After watching news story after story, you would think we would feel more connected to what is going on there, but instead we feel more disconnected. Simply put, there is a part of us that wants to be there in that community, offering our shoulders to those who are crying, listening to those who don't know how something this terrible could stem from another human being. We feel so bad for those students, their families, and the community around them.

As the shock lessens, the grief sets in, and the questions surmount, let's all remember this small community in our prayers. God, "deliver them and us from evil" and "Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven."

Protecting Life

Not long after we arrived here, we obtained quite a few plants. Shannon has since become the constant gardener. She's planted various things that have been given to us by church members, as well as tomatos, sunflowers, daisies, a couple bulbs, and other wild flowers. We've enjoyed watching them grow, all the while knowing full well that once they get good and going, it will be time for us to pick up and leave. We like our flowers, so much so that the other night when it was about to reach freezing (a record low around here for this time of year) we brought our little children (you're right--it is probably time for us to have children) in to the warm house and maintained their life.

This weekend we plan to place them back out in the elements and turn them loose. We'll post pictures soon once they are full grown. My favorite: The Sunflower. Shannon's: Paper whites.

Looking back and ahead

Today is quite the in-between for our spirituality. For the last two days, we have been remembering the death and silence of our Lord--tomorrow His resurrection from the dead. Today, we are in between those stations of our Lord's mission. On this particular day of waiting, we went to observe the recent death of a spiritual father. This particular gentleman, a member of the church we've been with for 7 weeks, had been a faithful participant in His church community for over 70 years. Recently, He was named citizen of the year in this community, where he headed such projects as Habitat for Humanity and the Boy Scouts. Ever since Shannon and I arrived here, he was always a faithful greeter--always letting us know how happy he was that we were here and always making sure that we had been invited to all of the church functions.

In quite a few of the meetings I was involved in, His words were always spiritual--his sentences always shaped by words and lessons from Scripture. In fact, only a few nights before his death, he said something in a meeting that left the remainder of the attendees in a moment of silence--as none could disagree or add anything to his humble wisdom. While those gathered at the funeral today probably had more experiences with this man than Shannon and I did, we both had enough to know that we had encountered someone very special. Of our travels so far, I doubt we have found anyone who modeled Christ more than he. I am thinking of Paul's words, "Death has lost its sting," and wondering why I and others in this community felt stung by all of this. On this day of waiting, the in-between, we look to tomorrow. We look to the day when our Lord was raised, and in so doing, hope to understand more about death, resurrection, and the meaning behind "Death has lost its sting."
Happy Easter from the Travelers!

Maunday Thursday

We just got back from a touching Maunday Thursday service at the church. It's interesting - in this church the choir loft is behind you up in the balcony, keeping you from staring at the people singing the words while allowing you to meditate on the words. This may be pretty common, but it's the first time I've seen it. I like it.

Tomorrow there are some churches in the area that are participating in a Stations of the Cross walk, so we're really looking forward to that as well.

Have a very Happy Easter!

Anniversary

Sean and I were talking today about how we've now been doing this traveling thing for one year now. I went back to my old blogs and found this one posted exactly one year ago. It's amazing how swiftly this year has gone and how much has happened. We are enjoying this life in ways we never even knew to expect to enjoy it. So, even though this evening ended with UNC's women's team getting beaten in the Final Four (bad year for both teams altogether), we're nevertheless optimistic about life and all that our God has in store for us.

Changing temps

After sporting shorts in close to 90 degree weather these past couple of days, it dropped down in the 50's today after a chilling rain last night. We weren't complaining, however, because our AC went on the fritz yesterday, so today was quite pleasant. Thankfully, we were able to get somebody to come fix it today, so our warm Charlotte spring will be much more bearable.

Sean will be home any minute with some Chinese food for a later dinner. His work is going very well at this church, and he's really enjoying working with this church leadership.

Beautiful weekend

Man, it's been gorgeous in Charlotte this weekend. We took advantage of the weather and spent a lot of time outside. I planted and potted some things and did some general yard work, which I love and have missed terribly. Sean and I also took some time to paint an original Mitchell masterpiece, as well as throw a baseball around the backyard. I can't wait until spring rears its full head here and all of the blooms come out with a vengeance!

We also have updated our Charlotte home pictures on Flickr.

The madness continues...

March Madness is a permanent fixture in our home this time of year, and this one in Charlotte is no different. Sean and I both filled out our brackets, and we both have had a few mistakes, but I suppose that is to be expected.

The big news of the week is that the same couple who has been so generous with us in loaning us various and sundry furniture pieces while we're here brought over an unused elliptical machine they had stowed in their basement. We are so excited to have that in the house now, as it helps to burn off some excess energy on those days when the rain gets the best out of our efforts to get outside and exercise.

Bobcats defeat Magic

One of the members from the church gave Shannon and me tickets to the Charlotte Bobcats game tonight - great seats up in a suite. We got there right at tipoff and enjoyed the game--especially seeing a few players from UNC's 2005 championship season.

Charlotte had a great shooting night, as they made 14 3-pointers - a franchise record! They kept a good lead most of the game over their opponent--the Orlando Magic--and overall didn't much look like a team that had previously lost 8 straight. Whatever they did tonight worked and they need to do more of it.

Now's it back to college basketball. I filled out my bracket today and am predicting Kansas to win the tournament. I hope UNC proves me wrong and does more than I anticipate for them.

March Madness

This week was the beginning of my annual immersion in the college basketball world's March Madness. I have been spending a lot of my free time watching all of the tournaments that lead up to the NCAA tournament. And the greatest wife in the world has been in complete support of my indulgence, as she knows how much this time of the year means to me.

As I write, it is halftime of UNC's game against FSU. After the game I have told Shannon that we will go out and see more of the area, and maybe see a movie.

I implore those who don't like college basketball to give it a chance over the next four weeks and watch a game or two. If nothing else, watch it to pull for the Tarheels!

Weekend news

Well, we had a very eventful weekend. Sean's cousin, Lindsay, was driving through from Clemson, and she decided to spend a night with us. It's always nice having her around - a very sweet girl that's extremely easy to be around. We felt kind of bad, though, because it ended up being a very hectic weekend to be in this house. We had a great couple give us some furniture that was a little less than brand new, so we called to have someone come and steam it clean for us, and while that went well, it hampered our schedule a bit since we had to wait around for them on Saturday to get here. Oh well. We now have some real furniture in our living room - though we're still hoping for a nice big couch to put in there too.

We also had another couple who has continually gone above and beyond the call of duty and brought by a bunch of nice iron outdoor furniture and lounge chairs for our front porch and big back deck. They also brought some more stuff yesterday including an area rug, tv, futon, and a great old rustic buffet table of sorts that they said we could actually keep when we're done here. We have no idea if/how we're going to have room for it when we're leaving, but we like it all the same!

Now that the house is in some kind of order, we really will post pictures soon to give you a glimpse into our lives.

Birthday Get-together

My (Shannon's) Mother's birthday was yesterday, and we decided to meet halfway in Greenville, SC for a day of shopping with the family. Momma, Gram, Christine, and the kiddos got to come, so I thoroughly enjoyed getting to spend a lovely day with part of my family. We might just make exchanging gifts at the food court a tradition, as that is what we did at the Mall of Georgia for my birthday in August last year as well. And we realized just how close we are, as the trip only took each of us about an hour and a half or less. Not too bad for a day trip, especially when it means getting to see the family that has lived so far away for almost 9 years!

Up and down the block

A couple from the Church took us out to dinner last night. They live two doors down and so, after we walked over, they gave us a tour of their beautiful home built in the early twentieth century. What most stood out on the tour was the fact that they had eight fireplaces. And of course, as any good tour of older southern homes would produce, we talked a bit about ghosts. One of the owners believes the house is haunted and shared a few incidents of haunting.

Today, the temperature reached close to seventy again. The weather here has been a treat compared to the wintery conditions we had been experiencing in Northern VA. I have been walking to and from work every day (as mentioned before, it is only about 100 yards away). We hear the spring around here is amazing and found out last night from our new friends that the comunity produces outdoor spring and summer concerts that we should be able to hear from our backyard. This place is starting to remind me of a few of my experiences in Lewes, DE last summer.

Blast from the past

I went on a mission today to find one of the homes I lived in when I first came in this world 32 years ago. My parents are trying to remember the address of the home I went to immediately after my birth, but we moved shortly after I was born to the parsonage right next door to the church where my Dad was the pastor. I GPS-ed it this afternoon and was able to take a walk down memory lane (of which I have not memories :) ) and take some pictures of our former home and church. The church and house are still there, though the church has changed names since we lived there.

New folks

We've been meeting a lot of new people this past week. While Sean has been in the church every day since we've arrived, I've already attended 3 separate functions they were holding there throughout the week. It's been good getting more familiarized to our new church home and learning some of the many names we've been introduced to.

Last night, we went to a dinner at a couple's home in the neighborhood. It was a good time of fellowship, and it ended with a lively debate over free will vs. predestination. Not my favorite topic (it was rather exhausted in college), but it's good that people are thinking.

We also found the Super Target closest to us yesterday afternoon in a new development that took us by a beautiful river and some huge homes. Charlotte is a lovely city.

Home Sweet Home

I began life here some 32 odd years ago, and now I've returned with my husband. We are loving life in Charlotte. Here's a quick run-down of the past 3 days:
  • On the way down to Charlotte on Friday, we had to get creative with our GPS in detouring us around a massive accident on 85-S that took several hours to clear. Thankfully, my Mother had seen it on the news and called to warn us about it before we got stuck in grid-lock. It added a bit of time to our trip, but not too bad.
  • Upon pulling in to the driveway of our new home, we had 3 vehicles pull in right behind us with church members bringing us a beautiful dining room table to use during our stay, and to help us unload our cars - which we did in 10 minutes with their help. One of the ladies also had already begun stocking our pantry with some essentials like milk, juice, garbage bags, plastic dinnerware, cookies, etc. Outstanding friendliness!
  • We have been to either Target or WalMart every day this weekend, I think. We're missing Ikea!
  • Saturday night, all of the members and spouses of the subcommittee for the church's capital campaign hosted a very nice dinner for us at the home right across the street. Everyone was so friendly, and they all keep insisting that we make a "Wish List" of things we could use in our home (since it's larger than we're used to). They are certain that there are plenty of people in the church with extra microwaves, sofas, desks, etc. One lady has even made Sean's day by telling him that she could even get a pool table in here if we want it!
  • Our first day of church yesterday was lovely. The sanctuary was easily the most beautiful either of us have ever seen, and the service was very good. More formal than the church in Warrenton, but we can enjoy either setting.
  • Yesterday, Sean was shown to his new office - he stood aghast in the room that looks as if C. S. Lewis might come walking out of it at any minute. A desk, computer, printer, conference table and chairs - as well as the grand furnishings - far exceed his hopes and expectations. That will be make his days spent in the church that much more of an enjoyable experience every day.
  • I have been organizing like mad, and I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Obviously, the guy came to hook up the internet today, so I'm a happy camper. Sean walked home - all 2 minutes of it - for lunch, and we're already looking forward to that over the next several months.

Well, that's it in a rather large nutshell. We're looking forward to keeping you updated on our new adventure in the days to come, and we'll get some pics posted here soon...

Moving day

Once again, the vehicles are packed without an inch to spare by my master packer, Sean. We are heading to Charlotte in just a few minutes. Our time here in Emporia has been good. We marvel at the blessings of family on both of our sides. I have contacted the local internet company, and we'll be online on Monday, so until then...

Lately, part 2

Yesterday, we went down to Charlotte to look at a house we might live in while we're there. On the way, Shannon and I put together a list of the essentials the house must have, as well as a separate list containing our "dream" amenities. The result? The house had everything--including my desire for a screened-in-porch and Shannon's for a claw-foot tub in the master bathroom. To top it off, the home is only about 100 yards from the Church on a street filled with southern charm and historic character.

On the way back, we stopped for shopping and had dinner at Panera in Charlotte. We had eaten there before, not too long ago. Back then we had no idea we would live here, but did have an inkling of such a possibility. Read this August 2006 blog and see our previous thoughts.

Lately

On Monday, the president of the company and I went down to Charlotte to meet with the leaders of the church project I will be directing. They were a great group of people, and both they and I are anticipating our partnership over the next several months.

One of the leaders has arranged a few housing opportunities for Shannon and me. We are planning to head down sometime next week for walk-throughs and hopefully to make a decision. They have also planned a party for us on our first night in town, so we're glad that will be a way for us to begin getting to know some church members.

The ball is rolling...

Sean just left with his boss for his meet & greet in Charlotte. He is supposed to meet the pastor and some members of the committee this evening. He should be home around 11pm or so.

I have to go run some errands, including a stop at the post office to mail out some ebay sales. I'm dwindling down my wardrobe slowly but surely...

The snow is following us...

After a full day yesterday of packing two vehicles without an inch to spare, and cleaning a curiously full apartment (even after having inhabited it only 5 months), we finally made the final break from Warrenton around 6pm. It has been a fantastic experience for both of us. Sean is still in love with his job, even after experiencing a "true" project will its fair share of obstacles and hurdles, and I am still loving traveling with my husband, helping him with his work, and working a bit on the side in a few different ventures. We realized recently that it will soon be one year since Sean first heard from his company with the proposal to work for them. This past year has flown by, and for the good.

We rolled in to Emporia last night and UNloaded two FULL vehicles for a while, and then we crashed. We woke up this morning to a fresh smattering of snow - it looks like we brought the snow with us here to Emporia. It's cold, but we're enjoying our break before we embark on our new adventure in Charlotte. We're still looking for a place to live, so news should be happening on that front soon...

Woman In Black

Last night Shannon and I went to see a production of The Woman in Black. Neither of us had experienced the story before, but we both agreed that both the acting was good and the story a nice creation. After all, it's hard to beat a good gh0st story.

With my project here in Warrenton ending last Monday, we are savoring our final days in this small town that we have called home since late August. Old man winter is making sure we know he is fond of this town, as he has been giving us a snowfall at least every other day for the last week. It is supposed to snow again tomorrow morning.

Wednesday is our last day and since we are such light travelers, moving shouldn't be that big of a deal. Sometime between now and then, I am sure we will patronize our favorite restaurants one last time.

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Snowy Sunday

We had a great time last night with the friends we made here in Warrenton. The dinner they had for us was lovely, and we know that we will be leaving some good friends here in Northern VA.

We woke this morning to a clear, crisp nip in the air (it was about 27 degrees when I got in the car to head for church). However, when we walked out of the church at noon, this is what it looked like:

And at home, we saw this Winter Wonderland:

Going away party

The members of the couple's Bible study we've been attending are having a going-away dinner for us tonight since Monday is Sean's last day at work. They've been a great group of people to share our time with in Warrenton, and so we're looking forward to spending one last evening with them tonight.

Head above water

As soon as I returned home from the holidays, I was afflicted with a nasty cold that kept me in bed or walking around in a semi-conscious Nyquil-induced state. I am finally feeling better from that, although I still have this lingering, stubborn cough. I read recently, though, that colds are only contagious during the first 48 hours you have them, so I think Sean made it out unscathed, fortunately.

Fortunately, yes, because he has been suffering with his own malady for the past couple of days too. He woke up Sunday night with a sharp pain in his neck, and while the sharpness of the pain has lessened, he still cannot turn his head all the way to the right. Poor guy. He called a chiropractor he has seen before, and they recommended a couple of different exercises for what they believe is a misaligned vertebra. Hopefully he will be feeling better soon too.

The Queen City

I found out earlier today where our next project will be: Charlotte, North Carolina. That's right, we are going to live in one of our favorite cities for five months. The project will begin in mid-February, which means we will have a few weeks in between projects to do some sub-traveling. In about a week or so, we will begin searching for our next home via-the-internet and probably make a trip down that way in early February.

Finally

Snow at last!

Inside

This weekend was spent mostly inside, as the focus was ridding Shannon of her cold. We viewed three movies--Lady in the Water, Game 6, The Matrix Revolutions--and saw a few episopes from season 1 of the sitcom Arrested Development and season 4 of The Jeffersons. And on other occasions when Shannon was in bed resting, on the computer, or talking on the phone, I caught up on sports (after tonight's win UNC should be ranked #1 in tomorrow's hoops poll).

Other happenings included: the partaking of literature, apple pie and ice cream, flavored teas, Starbuck's coffee, learning which celebrities each of us mostly resembles, and great conversation, just to name a few. We had fun, but we look forward to getting out again this week. Shannon started to feel better today, so I am planning on taking her to dinner tomorrow night.

new year, new adventures

Sean has been back in Virginia for several days now, and I now sit in Birmingham. I'll be flying back to VA tomorrow to reunite with the best husband in the world. I can't wait.

In the meantime, I am enjoying quality time back in my home state. We should be hearing any day now about our new assignment, so stay posted...
