St. Jude's

We made it out to St. Jude's Hospital and Research Center, which is only 5 minutes from our front door. Before coming here, we had no idea Memphis housed St. Jude's national center. On Saturday, we went mainly to go to the gift shot and to pick up a few shirts and other items dressed with the hospital's logo. After the purchases, we walked the grounds, toured the museum, and observed the Danny Thomas Memorial.

We read many amazing stories and statistics of how St. Jude is changing children's lives for the better. Through the research, philanthropy, and medical breakthroughs of the center, the chances that children have to survive diseases has greatly increased. This is good news for the world.

We also enjoyed learning more about the Danny Thomas story and why and how he organized the St. Jude's mission. The story swivels on a moment in Thomas' life when he was looking for direction in his life. While at a church in Detroit, he came upon the statue of St. Jude. Remembering St. Jude to be the saint of the helpless and desperate, Thomas prayed to the saint for a blessing. Years later, after finding direction and some success, Thomas remembered his cry to the Saint and decided to do something himself to help the helpless.
